James R. Ferris, age 71 of Monroe who had prearranged asking God’s forgiveness was admitted into his heavenly home on Sunday, January 5, 2020 at Monroe Health Services. James was born on September 18, 1948 in Sycamore, IL, the son of Otho and Elsie (Olic) Ferris. He graduated from Malta, IL High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1969 – 1971. He was a proud veteran who had the privilege of guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington, VA. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Jim worked as a sportswriter for the DeKalb, IL Daily Chronicle for a period of time before he and his parents moved to California. They eventually returned to Wisconsin and purchased an on old feed mill in Browntown. They operated Wide Horizons Company and a flea market from the old feed mill for several years.
Jim was a long time and active member of First Baptist Church of Monroe and enjoyed helping with CAMP JOY in Whitewater. He appreciated Monroe Public Library where did lots of computer work for his church and charities. He had worked part time for the Monroe Times and his favorite bible passage was John 3:16. Jim also marched in several military parades, arranged a winter festival for farm children, and enjoyed playing volleyball at the Green County YMCA.
He is survived by five brothers, John (Elaine), David (Jeanene), Daniel, Tim (Deb), and Chaplain Peter (Esther) Ferris, a sister, Kristi (John) Hudson of Monroe; six nieces and nephews; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at 11:00 a.m., at the First Baptist Church, 853 31st. Avenue, Monroe, with Rev. Matthew Spoonhour officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Union Grove, WI.
