Alvin F. Riese, age 97 of Monroe, died Tuesday, April 7, 2020 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. He was born on May 30, 1922 in Attica, rural Green County, the son of Wrennie and Anna (Vollman) Riese. He served in the Navy during W.W. II. on the U.S.S. Enterprise. Alvin married Dorothy K. Marti on September 21, 1968 at St. John’s United Church of Christ. His first job was working at a cheese factory, and then he worked for 4 different cheese factories; then he owned and operated several gas service stations; and his last job was at Equity Livestock Company for 20 years.
He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ and American Legion Zilmer-Riley Post #84 Monroe.
He is survived by his son, Gayle “Ole” (Kathy) Bartelt, Monroe; 14 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; daughters-in-law: Jan and Marilyn Bartelt; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sons, Gene and James Bartelt; daughter, Kay Tuescher; granddaughter, Lisa Tuescher; 3 sisters: Alice Wolfe, Helen Rufer and Mary Coplien; 6 brothers: Chester, Roy, Forrest, Elmer, Roger and Robert.
Private graveside services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery, with Reverend Todd Hackman officiating. There will be a public service with Military Rites at a later date.
