Nelson D. Malkow, Age 90, of rural Monticello, died Sunday, October 29, 2023 at his home. Nelson was born on September 24, 1933 on the farm in Sylvester Township, the son of Deylile and Ruth (Qualley) Malkow. He attended Smiley Rural School through the 8th grade. He married Caroline Mae (Broughton) Malkow on September 17, 1960 on the home farm. Following their marriage Nelson and Caroline purchased the family farm from Nelson’s father, Deylile. They milked cows, raised steers, hogs, sheep, chickens, and farmed the land with his brother, Glen.
Nelson always loved visiting with people and hearing their stories. He had a great memory and liked telling stories of years gone by. Most of all he would like to be remembered as a good farmer!
He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Laurie Malkow; son, Thomas (Marcia) Malkow; granddaughter, Marley Malkow; great granddaughter, Miller Hill; brother, Glen Malkow; and sister, Darlene Meier; all of Monticello. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Caroline, on December 24, 2019; sister, Donna Zimmerman; and sister-in-law, Linda Malkow.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., at the NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, Monroe, with Kevin Phillips officiating. Inurnment will be in Gap Cemetery, Albany Township. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday, November 4, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
