Lois Jean Elmer, age 89, of Monroe, WI passed away peacefully on January 28th, 2020 at Pleasant View. Lois was born on November 28th, 1930 in Monroe, WI to Stanley and Alpha (Skattum) Field. She married Glenn Elmer on July 28th, 1948. Lois and Glenn owned a dairy farm and resided outside of Monroe. In addition to farming, she took great pride in being a housekeeper for St. Clare Hospital where she gave 110% and was the recipient of an Exceptional Service Award.
Lois had a love for all animals, but a very special love for cats. She was a skilled baker & would often serve her desserts with the disclaimer that they “weren’t very good,” but your stomach always knew better—they’d be the best thing you’d eat all week. She also enjoyed being a housewife, gardening, and above all – striking up conversations with friends and strangers alike! She was always gloating about her kids and grandchildren. Her smile and laugh were contagious, and she had an unapologetic spunky sense of humor.
Lois had the most beautiful soul – she brought a light into this world that will not be extinguished by death. Everyone who knew her, even if only for a short time, described her as “the sweetest woman ever”. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother – her family came first and they were the most important people in the world to her. Her love was unconditional, without judgment, and everlasting. Lois gave and gave, without ever asking for anything in return – and what she left each of us cannot be destroyed or lost, it is permanent and allows her in so many ways to remain just alive as always – alive through us.
She will be missed greatly by her sister, June Chapman of Monroe; brother, Jim (Cinda) Field of Monroe; her children, Don Elmer of Madison, Barb Hauge of Monroe, Ron Elmer of Monroe, Sharon “Shari” (Don) Heinzen of Waunakee; son-in-law, John Schrantz of Milwaukee; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 4 great great-grandchildren; and her beloved cat, Izzy.
She was welcomed on the other side by her parents, Stanley & Alpha; husband, Glenn; brother, Arleigh Field; sister, Judy Figi; daughter, Karen Schrantz; son-in-law, Dan Hauge; and grandchildren, Kevin Nelson, Nicole Steiner, Gracie Schrantz; and the many beloved cats she cared for over the years.
Her family would like to give a special thanks to all the staff at Pleasant View, Country View, and Fresenius Dialysis for their exceptional love & care for Lois. A very special thank you to Joe Gadson who went above & beyond every single day and loved her like his very own Grandma.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, February 9th from 1-3PM at Shriner Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home.
A private burial will take place at a later date at Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be donated in Lois’s name to Green County Humane Society or Pleasant View Nursing Home.
