At approximately 4:14 PM, Green County Sheriff Deputies located a vehicle that had been reported as stolen through the Baraboo Police Dept. and was associated with an amber alert. The suspected driver of the vehicle, Austin J Dailey, 19, Baraboo, was an escaped inmate from Sauk County Jail – Huber Facility, who had a warrant for his arrest through WI Department of Corrections. Dailey was later confirmed to be the driver. Green County Sheriff Deputes attempted to conduct a high risk stop on the vehicle on State HWY 69 at Hill Ln., Town of Monroe.
Dailey initially stopped for Green County Sheriff Deputies, but then fled westbound on Hill Ln., into the dead end cul-de-sac, where he struck a mailbox. Dailey returned to State HWY 69, where Green County Sheriff Deputies, along with WI State Patrol and Monroe Police Dept., continued to pursue him. The pursuit travelled eastbound on State HWY 11, then southbound onto County HWY S.
At about 4:24pm Green County Communications Center notified the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office that Green County Sheriff Deputies were pursuing a vehicle described as a gray Dodge Journey southbound on Juda Road from the state line into Stephenson County. Upon reaching the Illinois State Line, Green County Sheriff Deputies terminated the pursuit.
Soon after the notification from the Green County Sheriff’s Office, a Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy observed the Dodge Journey traveling southbound on Rock City Road at a very high rate of speed. Before the Deputy was able to attempt a traffic stop, the Dodge Journey driven by Dailey continued at a high rate of speed southbound on Rock City Road and failed to stop for the stop sign at Route 75 colliding with another vehicle that was travelling westbound on Route 75. Dailey attempted to run from the scene of the accident and was immediately taken into custody by a Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy. Both Dailey and the driver of the other vehicle, a female juvenile, were taken by ambulances to Freeport Health Network Hospital for treatment.
Dailey was admitted to the hospital due to injuries received as a result of the crash and will be transported to the Stephenson County Jail on release. Charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, driving while license suspended, reckless driving, and misdemeanor speeding will be forthcoming. The juvenile driver of the second vehicle was treated and released from the hospital.
The fifteen year-old victim in the Amber Alert, Kiera Krumenauer, was not in the vehicle at the time of the crash and had already been returned to her family in Wisconsin.
The investigation is ongoing. The Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office is working in conjunction with Wisconsin Law Enforcement authorities on this case.
Assisting at the scene was the Illinois State Police, Green County Sheriff’s Office, Rock City Fire Department, Tri-District Ambulance and Durand Ambulance.
